Destination Jungle: Kapok Tree Sprouts Up at Central Library

The Kapok Tree, displayed in the Children's Area at the Central Library, is courtesy of Marian Bakker and Vaughan Willard Public School.
This was done very well! I am trying to do something like it at my school. The trunk looks 3D but the top looks painted. Does anyone know how it was done? Thanks!
This was made by local school children at Vaughn Willard Public School under the direction of their Teacher Librarian. The leaves and birds are painted but the trunk was a giant tube cut in half and then covered with burlap material. I am sure that they would be happy to tell you about how to make it if you contact the school.
