Library Kiosk at Pickering GO station?
The Toronto Public Library is considering installing an automated book dispensing kiosk at Union Station:

Pickering Library staff have been considering this service for a number of years. The start-up cost has always presented an issue - $200,000 K according to Toronto Public Library, although this could be done in a small community for about $110,000.
I would be interested in any feedback from our clients - Would you use this service while travelling the GO?

A library kiosk at the Pickering Go station would be a great idea particularly to borrow and return items.
It's expensive, but forward thinking - especially since we are getting a renovated/modernized GO station. I would certainly consider using it. I am a commuter who doesn't drive... a perfect example of someone who does not frequent branches.
I would love this. I visit the library approx twice per week. However there are times when I get 'stuck' at work and return to Pickering after 9 pm. This could be a convenient way to get a new book or two, and I could even do so on the way to work in the morning. There have been times when I finish a book on the GO train and don't have time to get to the library to pick up my holds and I absolutely must read on the train, the train ride would be boring without a book.
Yes, I would absolutely use this service. The only chance I get to read is on the GO train! Agree w/comment above - sometimes it's hard to even get to the library, this would be very convenient.
If the dispensing kiosk turns out to be cost prohibitive, I would love having at least a return box at the station. I often end up renewing books just because I don't have the time to go and return them to the library. Especially when taking transit to/from the station it can be tricky to find time to go in.
I get most of my books using hold requests so I'm not sure how that would work with an automated kiosk. It would be very helpful to be able to return books at the GO station as I commute to and from work instead of making a separate trip.
I think a return service makes sense (and cents) to start. The number of returns may give a good indication of how many people may use this service. If there is enough demand then moving to expand it would be justified.
My question is what other initiatives would the library have to give up or postpone as a trade off for adding the new service.
I believe $100,000 plus for a Kiosk is cost prohibitive. As one reply indicated many individuals (myself included) use the "hold" service for their books and I don't see how it could be utilized with an automated Kiosk. A drop box however would be a great idea. Perhaps if it is popular, a more comprehensive survey or ideas for suggestions on a Kiosk could be pursued. For now, I would rather see the $100,000 used to ensure the library can continue to purchase new releases of well read series and keep up with technology such as e-books. Or reorganize the Central Library which seems to have a lot of "dead space" (under-utilized) - yet the "hold" section wall is often overflowing onto carts.
