Choosing an eReader that works at the Library

ebook reader

Did you get an eReader over the holidays? Why not get your eBooks free at the library? If you don’t have an eReader of your own, the Pickering Public Library will be lending out Kobo eReaders to clients from the Central Library and Petticoat Creek branches. Clients can come in and check out an eReader, then get staff help to load it with eBooks.

eReaders
The eBooks at the library are compatible with the following eReaders:

  • Kobo, Kobo Ereader Touch and Kobo Vox
  • Aluratek LIBRE
  • Pandigital Novel
  • Apple iPad and iPad 2
  • Sony Reader Pocket Editition PRS-T1, PRS350 and PRS650

For further information, please contact staff at the Central Library's iHelp (905) 831-6265 ext. 6257 or download our Choosing an ereader that works pamphlet.

Any plans for the RIM play book to become one of the approved units for e-lending?

OverDrive Media Console for the Playbook

Dear client,

On their Facebook Page January 4th, an OverDrive representative stated they were investigating options for the Playbook and would have an answer shortly.
When OverDrive makes one available, we will let everyone know.

Playbook support

I have had problems in the past trying to get help at the library to download audiobooks to my BlackBerry. I find it disappointing that Apple products are supported, but not those from here in Canada.

Compatible Devices with our ebook and downloadable audiobooks

Currently, there are over 130 devices in Canada which are compatible with our ebook and audiobook downloads including RIM BlackBerry phones. We recommend clients always speak with Library Staff or check their devices for compatibility at http://www.overdrive.com/resources/drc/.

Update on Overdrive and the RIM Playbook

On Jan 31, Overdrive announced on their Facebook page that the Overdrive app is waiting in the App World once RIM releases OS 2.0.
In January, RIM announced that the upgrade should be available in February. Playbook users would be notified of the OS upgrade on their devices, in the same way you are told about other apps.
We will be happy to help our patrons learn how to use the app once it is available.
